Change Grab's Default Filetype

If you use Grab to take screenshots on your Mac, you don't really have many options as to which type of file Grab is going to save the screenshot as.

You do have options to change this default file type. Simply type one of the following commands in Terminal (found under /Applications/Utilities) to change the default.
  • defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
  • defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf
  • defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png
  • defaults write com.apple.screencapture type psd
  • defaults write com.apple.screencapture type tif

I changed the default type and the image file that gets saved on to my Desktop is indeed the designated file type (in my case, .jpg) when I use the 'Apple Command'+'Shift'+'3' or '4'; however, when I invoke the screen capture from the Grab application, the file type resorts to .tiff.
